Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is a powerful work of raw emotional intensity. With themes of adultery and murder, the story follows the downfall of a bored provincial merchant’s wife who seeks solace and excitement in an extra-marital affair.

With a bold and contemporary setting, the staging provides the perfect backdrop to this 20th-century opera’s unflinching approach to sex and violence.

Shostakovich’s fast-paced and dynamic score will be conducted by ENO Music Director Mark Wigglesworth. He is partnered by Dmitri Tcherniakov, one of the most in-demand directors currently working in opera.

The world-class cast is led by soprano Patricia Racette, one of today’s greatest singing actresses, alongside acclaimed British tenors John Daszak as her lover, Sergei, and Peter Hoare as the cuckolded Zinovy.

Special notes

Sung in English with lyrics projected above the stage. Please note: No view of surtitles from row H backwards in Dress Circle and rows K & L in the Upper Circle.
